Welcome
Statement from Nottingham Declaration Partnership
The Nottingham Declaration Partners strongly welcome the inclusion of climate change indicators in the Comprehensive Area Assessment (CAA) and encourage all local authorities - signatories and non-signatories alike – to include climate change indicators in their local area agreements (LAAs).
The Partnership is considering how best to support local authorities to take action to better adapt to the impacts of climate change, and reduce carbon emissions from their communities and operations. As part of this, the Partnership is actively considering a number of options for monitoring and reporting tools, benchmarking and self evaluation allowing us to provide improved support to councils and to aid CAA assessment. Nottingham Declaration Accreditation, as referenced in the technical detail of NI 188, is one option being considered. Local authorities and stakeholders will be consulted on these options over the summer. Any resulting scheme will be voluntary and designed to help local authorities better target their activity and help reduce the burden of assessment.
In addition, the Nottingham Declaration Partnership is considering how to improve the package of support it offers to signatories. As an initial step a much improved Nottingham Declaration website is due to be launched in June 2008. Our intention is that the website will become a “one-stop-shop” for local authorities seeking advice on climate change and will:
- Act as a portal to all available advice and support for local authorities on both adaptation and mitigation
- Include the latest news on climate change as well as information designed specifically for Elected Members and detailed advice on specific service areas
- Draw on the experience of the Partners to identify good practice and then signpost signatories to that good practice
-
Become a living site that is continuously updated
Climate change poses a genuine threat to our planet
The scale of the challenge means that all sectors of the community have to be involved if we are to meet targets for reducing emissions and adapting to climate change.
Local Authorities in particular have a crucial role to play in responding to this challenge.
Councils can show their commitment to this important issue by signing The Nottingham Declaration on climate change (2000).
By signing, they pledge to actively tackle climate change in your area and work with others to reduce emissions country-wide.
Individual communities can also benefit significantly. Energy use can be cut and overall environmental performance can be improved leading to significant cost savings.
Citizens and property can also be protected from threats posed by a changing climate such as flooding.
Has your local authority signed up?
So far, over 200 local authorities have already signed the declaration, but it's vital that all local authorities commit themselves to the process.
If your local authority is yet to sign, register them today and we'll send you a declaration information pack. It shows you how to develop a sustainable energy strategy in your area.
Alternatively phone the Energy Saving Trust's information service for local authorities on 0870 241 2089 email us.
Nottingham Declaration Action Pack
This is a unique resource that is designed to support local authorities throughout the stages from starting to address the challenges of climate change through to reviewing implemented plans. This addition to the site is accessible via the tab at the top of the page.
Nottingham Declaration Community
There is an online community for those who have signed the Nottingham Declaration, are users of the Nottingham Declaration Action Pack, or are thinking about signing up. It’s a place for you to comment, give feedback and interact with other signatories. We hope you will use it to share thoughts and ideas about how you are addressing climate change in your area. To access it click here and search for Nottingham Declaration in the “Find a Community” section.
